■ The Ruark R3S tries to cater for everything the modern music world has to offer. It supports Spotify Connect, Amazon Music and Deezer (for others you can just connect to it over Bluetooth); it offers a vast array of DAB and internet radio stations; and there's even a CD player like it’s 1998 all over again.

■ You can control it with your phone, the remote, or the chunky dial on top, which is surrounded by important buttons and is ideal for when you can't be bothered to fish out either of the other two. We were happily spinning the dial to blaze through settings and lists, wistfully recalling our old iPod.
