Nintendo gives another of its classics a modern makeover - but does this side-scrolling platform game suggest it's starting to scrape the banana-barrel of its back catalogue?

Mario might be Nintendo's main mascot, but people often forget that the heroic plumber's debut actually came in a game named after Donkey Kong. And for gamers of a certain age, that name will always be associated with 1994's Donkey Kong Country, a famously difficult side-scrolling platformer that's just been given the HD treatment.

Well, it's still tough. Owing to Donkey Kong's weight, every jump requires serious thought and consideration to execute, while you really have to get your timing right if you want to pull off a long jump. The secrets and collectibles are also more fiendish than any that Mario is usually tasked with finding. Even with the help of a parrot that indicates when a jigsaw piece is nearby, you'll still be racking your brain as to where or how you can obtain it.
