Strip hidden .DS_Store files

Archives that I send to colleagues running Windows contain strange.DS_Store files, although I can't see them in the Finder. What are they and how can I avoid them?

Officially known as Desktop Services Stores, these files are common in folders accessed in the Finder. They contain information for the Finder about how to lay out the folder's contents, and store any Finder Comments for fi
