Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX will acquire xAI, creating what analysts say could become the most valuable private company in the world. The merger brings together SpaceX's launch, satellite, and orbital operations with xAI's large-scale artificial intelligence models, forming a single platform designed to power AI workloads from space.

SPACEX AND ΧΑΙ COMBINE IN BOLD BET ON ORBITAL AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Musk described the move as a long-term strategy to solve one of AI's most pressing constraints: energy.

By shifting compute-intensive workloads into orbit and powering them with continuous solar generation, he argues the combined company can bypass the electricity limits and carbon costs that are now constraining terrestrial data centers.

At the center of the announcement is a vision Musk has floated for years but never at this scale—using orbital infrastructure as a new backbone for global computing.

ORBITAL DATA CENTERS AND SOLAR POWER

According to Musk, the combined company will pursue what he calls “space-based Al compute,” placing large-scale processing systems aboard satellites. The idea is to use solar power in orbit to run Al models without straining power grids on Earth.

He says the concept is both an environmental and economic solution. Terrestrial Al clusters already consume massive amounts of electricity, pushing utilities to expand generation capacity and data centers to compete for power. Orbital systems, powered by near-constant sunlight, could operate independently of those limits.

The plan would rely on satellite-based compute modules acting as data centers, networked together in constellations. These systems would transmit results back to Earth through high-speed laser links, reducing the need for power-hungry ground facilities.
