SOUTHWEST AIRLINES MANDATES VISIBLE CHARGER USE TO CURB LITHIUM-ION BATTERY FIRE RISKS
May 23, 2025
|AppleMagazine
Southwest Airlines announced a new safety policy this week, effective June 1, 2025, requiring passengers to keep portable chargers in plain sight while in use on flights, addressing growing concerns over lithium-ion battery fires.
-
The decision follows incidents where chargers, often tucked into seat pockets or bags, sparked fires or emitted smoke, posing risks to the 174 million passengers Southwest carries annually. For travelers, airline safety experts, and regulators, the policy highlights the escalating challenge of managing lithium-ion battery hazards in aviation, a critical issue in a $1 trillion global airline industry where safety is paramount.
The move aligns with broader efforts to mitigate battery-related incidents, which the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports occur more than once per week on U.S. flights, driven by the ubiquity of devices like smartphones and power banks.
SOUTHWEST'S NEW CHARGER POLICY
Starting June 1, 2025, Southwest Airlines will prohibit passengers from using portable chargers unless they are kept visible, such as on tray tables or in hand, to ensure quick detection of any overheating or sparking. The policy applies to all flights operated by Southwest, which serves 121 airports across 11 countries with a fleet of 815 aircraft.
The airline emphasized that chargers must remain accessible, not stowed in seat pockets or bags, where fires could smolder unnoticed. Southwest's statement noted that this measure aims to enhance safety for its 174 million annual passengers, citing incidents where chargers caused smoke or fires, though no specific events were detailed.هذه القصة من طبعة May 23, 2025 من AppleMagazine.
