APPLE'S AI STRATEGY TAKES CENTER STAGE AS IPHONE 17 LAUNCHES WITHOUT FULL SIRI OVERHAUL
September 12, 2025
|AppleMagazine
Apple's iPhone 17 lineup has debuted, accompanied by its first wave of Apple Intelligence features, but one of the most anticipated upgrades—an entirely AI-powered Siri—remains absent.
-
The new Siri, promised earlier this year as a reimagined assistant with conversational memory, reasoning abilities, and cross-app automation, will not be available until 2026. The decision reflects Apple's broader AI strategy: prioritize privacy, polish, and seamless ecosystem integration over racing rivals to deploy generative assistants that may be powerful but inconsistent.
APPLE INTELLIGENCE AS THE FIRST STEP
Apple Intelligence, launched alongside the iPhone 17, brings generative AI capabilities to everyday apps rather than making Siri the centerpiece. Users can access tools that summarize long emails, rewrite text, generate images, and suggest context-aware actions. These features are powered primarily by on-device processing using Apple's A-series and M-series chips, a design choice that Apple says improves both speed and privacy.
By starting with narrow, task-specific AI features instead of a full conversational assistant, Apple is managing expectations. The company is signaling that AI will arrive in incremental, highly functional steps rather than through a single, splashy launch of a next-gen Siri.
WHY THE NEW SIRI IS DELAYEDAt its June developer conference, Apple previewed a Siri that could hold contextual conversations, remember prior interactions, and perform multi-step tasks across different apps. For example, a user might ask Siri to find a file emailed weeks ago, attach it to a message, and schedule it for later—all in one command.
