A game of exceptionally few chances rarely threatened to bring any real excitement, aside from Oldham striker Mike Fondop volleying over from the edge of the area and Sutton forward Ryan Jackson forcing a good save from Latics debutant Tom Donaghy.

For the hosts, it means they are still winless at Boundary Park in 2025.

"We didn't show enough quality to create many chances," said Mellon, whose side did not muster a shot on target or corner all afternoon.

"We looked better towards the end, but we've got to give them a lot of credit, they were determined and defended very well.
