MACCLESFIELD chairman Rob Smethurst believes Robbie Savage has made a mistake by defecting to Forest Green.
The former Wales midfielder, who played in the Premier League for Blackburn, Leicester and Birmingham, helped to found the phoenix club with Smethurst in 2020.
He worked as director of football before stepping into the dugout last term and subsequently led Macclesfield to the NPL Premier title with a record-breaking 109 points.
But having pledged his loyalty to the Silkmen in the aftermath of promotion by signing a new two-year deal, Savage stunned Smethurst by accepting an approach from National League big-hitters Forest Green and was this week unveiled as the Gloucestershire side’s new boss.
