Mike Goode’s side flirted with becoming the latest victims of fearless Atherton LR, slayers of four foes from a higher level to reach this stage, before steadying themselves to prevail after a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Goalkeeper Dan Swan emerged as the Wakes’ hero, stopping spot-kicks from Ryan Talbot, George Chadwick, and finally Kyle Robinson-Murray to seal a sudden-death success.

“To win like that is an unbelievable feeling,” an elated Goode told The NLP. “After missing the first penalty, to recover the way we did was really something. Dan has been brilliant for us recently, and he made three great saves.”
