FIVE STAR CARE WORK

If you have watched a greyhound race at a dog track and wondered what goes on behind the scenes you might have seen the trainer's name beside the dog and thought 'what does the trainer actually do'.

The success of every race doesn't just hinge on the speed of the dogs; it also depends heavily on the expertise and dedication of the handlers. These professionals are the unsung heroes who nurture, prepare, and care for the greyhounds, ensuring they are ready to perform at their best while also prioritising their health and well-being.

What is the job spec?

A greyhound trainer is a skilled individual responsible for the daily management and training of racing greyhounds. Their role is a blend of care, discipline, and strategy, balancing the physical fitness of the dogs with their mental agility.

Trainers work closely with veterinarians, kennel staff, and owners with the aim of producing top race-winning dogs.

The daily routine.

Every day for a trainer begins early, often before sunrise. The first task is to check on each greyhound's health. This includes inspecting the dogs for any signs of illness or injury, administering medications if necessary, and ensuring they are well-hydrated. Maintaining good health is the foundation for training and racing success.
