The decision came after a request was submitted by the Professional Cycling Council, which represents teams, riders and race organisers, including Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme.

Is it a good idea? Absolutely. First, some context. Until now, 176 riders have been allowed to start each Grand Tour (22 teams of eight), but you don't have to look too far back to find larger pelotons. In 2017, the rules permitted 198 riders on the start line, before teams were stripped back from nine riders to eight the following year. The World Championships still permit a 200-strong peloton.
