Italian thoroughbred from the heart of pro racing
Ugo De Rosa, who died earlier this year aged 89, built frames for Eddy Merckx and Francesco Moser and went on to front one of the most iconic Italian brands of the last 50 years.
Comparisons are often made between De Rosa and his contemporary, Ernesto Colnago. Both men got their big breaks as framebuilders and mechanics when they were scouted by a top racer in the 1950s: Fiorenzo Magni took on Colnago, while De Rosa was asked by Raphaël Géminiani to build him a frame for the 1958 Giro d’Italia.
