DIY WINE RACK
May - June 2025
|Popular Mechanics US
Make it your own by selecting unique wood, altering the dimensions, or using a special finish.
YOU DON'T NEED to be a sommelier or an oenophile to enjoy a bottle of wine. Similarly, you don’t need to be an expert woodworker to build this tabletop wine rack and display your favorite brands or varieties. You don’t need any special tools, and you can easily customize it to suit your style or space. Make it smaller to fit on your counter and under cabinets, choose a lighter or darker species of wood, or select a different type of finish—the choices are yours. Here, we'll show you the basics of how we built ours.
MATERIALS□ 8" x 36" x 1" board [approximate]
□ 1" x 18" x 1" scrap of wood [for splines]
□ Wood glue
□ Finish [we used satin polyurethane]
GETTING STARTEDCUT PARTS
You can use just about any species of wood, as long as you have a board about 8 inches wide by 36 inches long by 1 inch thick. We used a piece of cherry with a live edge. Get creative and find an interesting slab of wood if you like, or you can stick with standard dimensional lumber. You need two pieces, so cut one length at 13 inches and a second at 22 inches.
CUT MITERS
If you want the wood grain to line up, be sure to make the miter joint on the ends, where it was cut apart. The rack will lean back, slightly, at a 97-degree angle, so you'll need to cut the miter at 48.5 degrees (2A) on one end of each piece. Sand the miter faces flat (2B).

A WEIRD (AND FREE!) SOUND SYSTEM HACK
THERE ARE SO MANY VARIABLES TO how a room's dimensions, a building's construction, the placement of furniture, and the materials of that furniture affect the sound of speakers and subwoofers that there's no way to offer a one-size-fits-all, \"put it here\" maxim for the absolute best subwoofer sound quality.
