The popularity of Microsoft's second console made it a tough act to follow. In fact, the Xbox 360 sold so well that manufacturing wasn't discontinued until 2016 - three years after the launch of its successor. The Xbox One needed to offer some serious enhancements over its predecessors, as well as its eight-generation competitors - mainly the Sony PlayStation 4, but also the Nintendo Wii U. So alongside a big boost to processing power, memory and storage, improving in-game visual fidelity and frame rates, Microsoft added a number of hardware and software features to make the Xbox One more attractive to gamers.
