With only so much money you can spend and hours to play, gaming has had its fair share of cult classics over the years, games with a small but devoted group of fans. And few in recent memory feel as consistently championed as Dragon’s Dogma. First released in 2012 on PS3, and receiving a Definitive Edition a year later on PS4, it’s finally getting the sequel fans have hoped for for years.
So why has it taken so long to make a followup? “I really wanted to be able to make a sequel right after the game came out, so sorry for making everyone wait so long,” says Hideaki Itsuno when we ask his thoughts on the years of community championing. “I’ve been so grateful to see so many fans appreciate the quality of the game and support it for so many years. […] Having fans support the game – both inside Capcom and out! – is definitely something that helped push the project towards realisation.”
TAKING FLIGHT
All the first game’s little eccentricities are remaining intact for Dragon’s Dogma 2, with the devs leaning into what fans love rather than pivoting into the mainstream. One of these is the grounded nature of the world, and the way you and your party move through it and clash with enemies big (and we mean big) and small.
