India is currently at a pivotal stage. Its armed forces have relied heavily on foreign suppliers for decades, not only for platforms and armaments but also for the detailed, meticulous maintenance, repair, and overhaul processes that keep these platforms operational.

The issue is no longer whether India can produce more equipment domestically; rather, it is whether the country can maintain, repair, and upgrade that equipment locally, and even export these services, given a rapidly modernising fleet, a proactive industrial policy environment, and a maturing private sector. The demand side: the reasons behind the urgent and increasing demand.

The demand for MRO services in India is expected to increase significantly over the next decade, driven by both quantitative and qualitative factors. Quantitatively, the number of complex naval platforms is increasing, as is the size of the aircraft fleet, which includes military, paramilitary, and civilian aircraft. Specialist analysts foresee a major expansion of India's commercial aircraft fleet and a subsequent increase in MRO volumes.

Even more remarkable is the rise in the number of defence platforms: the defence establishment's procurement plans and modernisation initiatives indicate a consistent acquisition of fighters, transport aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft, helicopters, corvettes, frigates, destroyers, and submarines. A range of services that make up the MRO market, including scheduled maintenance, unscheduled repairs, midlife upgrades, and systems overhauls, will be essential for these platforms.
