Having retired two years ago, Forest of Dean-based Huw has been able to devote more time to his photography, and his ambition is to make it a cost-neutral pastime. Eclectic in what he shoots, his favoured genres include sport - especially rugby - landscapes, wildlife and portraits.

Welcome to Digital Camera Apprentice, where we pair a reader with a professional photographer for a day of shooting together. The concept is simple: the pro acts as a photographic mentor, sharing their expert insights to help the reader improve their favoured genre of photography - it's like having a one-to-one workshop, but a wider audience gets to see what happens. This month, we're heading indoors for a fashion portrait session, on the suggestion of reader Huw Jones. Huw is a keen photographer who funds his passion by selling prints and merchandise of his work - all his family and friends are proud owners of presents with his photos on, he deadpans. Joking aside, though, Huw's bond with photography runs deep. He came to the medium after a diagnosis of PTSD and has immersed himself in it, shooting a wide range of styles with his Nikon setup, which includes a pair of Z 8s and various Nikkor lenses. Huw got in touch and said he would love to be one of our apprentices, learning how to improve his studio photography, in particular, using lights to emphasise movement.
