Nikon Z 9 cameras sent to International Space Station

In a recent update, Nikon's flagship full-frame mirrorless camera, the Z 9, has been dispatched to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the 20th Northrop Grumman commercial resupply mission for NASA.

This marks the introduction of Nikon's mirrorless technology to space exploration, replacing the station's existing Nikon D6 and D5 DSLR cameras.

The Cygnus cargo spacecraft, launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on January 30, 2024, carried multiple Z 9 camera bodies and a selection of NIKKOR Z lenses to the ISS. This equipment will aid astronauts in capturing high-quality images of earth and outer space. Nikon's association with NASA dates back over 50 years to the Apollo 15 mission, with various models, including the Nikon F5 and D series, being used in space. The Z 9, known for its durability and advanced technology, has been specifically chosen for its ability to withstand the challenging conditions of space. Despite its use in space, the Z 9 cameras sent to the ISS are physically the same as those available to consumers on Earth, showcasing the camera’s reliability.
