Give the time with your camera more purpose and create stronger, more personal images. Angela Nicholson hears from six photographers who share how they discovered their creative calling

- Angela Nicholson

Find your passion in photography

Photography is a vast and varied art form, offering endless opportunities to express yourself and tell a story. But with so many genres and subjects to explore, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or to head out with your camera and end up photographing everything and anything without focus. By discovering your creative vision – that special approach, subject, or technique that resonates with you – your time with the camera becomes more purposeful and your photography naturally improves.

Over the next few pages, six talented photographers share their journeys of discovery, revealing how they each found their creative calling. Whether it’s embracing the simplicity of minimalism, exploring the intrigue of multiple exposures, experimenting with editing controls, trying new kit or capturing the serendipity of street photography, their stories highlight the beauty of photography as a deeply individual pursuit.

Let their experiences inspire you to uncover your own photographic ‘thing’.

Helen Trust: Focus on Mood and Meaning

Helen is an award-winning photographer based in Somerset and an ambassador for Formatt Hitech filters. Her day job in Programme and Website Management involves detailed analysis, which is why minimalism in photography came so naturally. Slowing things down and shooting for squares has been her norm for 15 years. Instagram: @helen_trust Website: www.helentrustphotography.com

A few years ago, I won a Formatt Hitech photography competition, and I was sent a pack of ND filters. These filters slowed everything down and I loved the look of subjects surrounded by lots of smooth sea and sky. Around that time, I was working on an exceptionally high-pressure project and took a six-month career break to de-stress. I spent a lot of time on the coast and loved all the groynes, piers and simple stuff in the water.
