Vets share what your dog's panting really means

Dogs panting is usually normal and can happen for lots of reasons, but sometimes it might mean there's a problem to check.

Panting is part of a dog's normal cooling process. Unlike us, dogs don't sweat (except through their paws!), so to regulate their body temperature and cool themselves down, they pant instead.

While it can be normal for dogs to pant at times, a relaxed and comfortable pooch in mild weather usually won't be panting.

Panting is generally in response to something, so you are more likely to see your dog pant after exercise or on a warm day. You may also see them panting if they're excited about something, like a good game of fetch.

Knowing whether your dog is panting too much can be difficult, but it's important to know when the signs may be pointing to something more serious.
