A local primary school's environmental club has won first place in a West Yorkshire sustainability competition for its innovative efforts to help people and the planet.

- by Jennifer Cartwright

Pudsey Primrose Hill School's eco committee is a group of 12 pupils aged nine to 11 from Pudsey Primrose Hill Primary School who are dedicated to helping to look after the environment.

Last September they were challenged by Asda to make a positive impact in their local community as part of the supermarket's Asda Heroes scheme.

The group decided they wanted to use their time to help the Pudsey Community Project, a local charity which provides food, clothes and social resources to support and uplift the community.

The eco-committee decided to grow vegetables from seed in their school allotment and donate these to the Pudsey Community Project for their food bank and senior lunch club. By working with Asda they were also able to coordinate donations of food items impossible to grow in a garden such as rice, tea bags, biscuits, and cereals.
