Find way to tax emissions

December 26, 2025

Yorkshire Evening Post

Clark Cross suggests adding a 20 per cent carbon tax to tickets for music and sporting events ('Why not a green tax on events', Dec 22).

Well, it's good for winding people up, but is this a logical approach to reducing carbon emissions? We can do much better.

It's far more rational to look more specifically at what produces the greenhouse gas emissions - the fossil fuels used at the sites and for transporting participants and attendees.

Taxing these directly does a much better job by addressing all human activities.

In the case of spots and music events, it would encourage venues and people to make less polluting choices.

For example, music festivals often rely on high-emission diesel generators and organisers need to be motivated to push for suitable connections to the grid to provide much cleaner electricity.
