Closed locks leave boats in 'dry dock'

It is not just gardens and reservoirs which have been affected by the record-breaking hot summer.

The locks along the city section of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal are currently closed and some stretches - such as by the Wellington Road overpass - have almost completely dried up, leaving boats stranded.

The locks have been closed since the end of June through low water levels, and the Canal and Rivers Trust has said that they will remain so until there has been sufficient rainfall.
