British engineering shows eastern promise

Classic marque's new home hasn't affected MG, writes Frederic Manby

In 2006 ownership of MG passed to the Chinese. Since 2016 all have been made in China. Last year it sold us 81,538 cars, making it the largest car marque import-ing from China and the tenth best seller overall.

Here we try the newly re-vised petrol-powered HS, a large stylish hatch back with front wheel drive, which MG calls an SUV. It accounted for 30,207 sales and was eighth overall in the UK.

The price from £24,995 for the SE (add £1,500 for DCT automatic gears) buys a well-equipped and smart family sized car with no ap-parent cost-cutting in its furnishings. It has a five-star European safety rating and a seven year or 80,000 mile warranty.
