CARDIFF won't be getting carried away despite their superb start to the United Rugby Championship season.

Friday night's 24-17 victory over the Dragons in the Welsh derby at Rodney Parade was Cardiff's third in their opening four games.

Their only defeat in Munster yielded two losing bonus points.

Friday's result propelled them to the top of the table, something few would have expected after the departure of head coach Matt Sherratt to Wales on the eve of the new season.

They ended the weekend in fourth spot, but it remains an excellent start to the campaign.

"I'm just happy with the result tonight," said coach Corniel van Zyl afterwards.

Van Zyl has taken over the reins from Sherratt and could scarcely have made a better start.

"It's a derby and you want to get on the right side of that," he said.

"It was a tough one and we ground it out, similar to last week against Connacht.
