Wales sees first cases of bluetongue
September 30, 2025
|Western Mail
THE first cases of a deadly livestock virus have been identified in Wales, it has been reported.
The Welsh Government said bluetongue (BTV-3) was found at two premises, one in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, and another in Presteigne, Powys.
Bluetongue is a noncontagious, insect-borne viral disease that primarily affects sheep, cattle, goats and other ruminants.
It is transmitted by biting midges and, while most cattle infections are mild or asymptomatic, it can cause severe, often fatal, symptoms in sheep, such as fever, lameness and swelling.
