Soggy start for Jinjin after move from Germany

A RARE bamboo-muncher got a soggy welcome when she arrived in north Wales for an extended stay.

The female red panda with a Chinese name flew in from Germany to take up residence at the Welsh Mountain Zoo.

Jinjin joined resident male Red Hop in his enclosure last week and it's barely stopped raining since. Despite the conditions, she seems to be revelling in her new home, which offers spectacular views out across Colwyn Bay, Conwy.

Born at Wuppertal Zoo in western Germany, she was brought to north Wales in the hope she can continue the zoo's breeding successes. She replaces Nuri, Red Hop's mate since March 2022.

Now aged 18 months, Jinjin was judged to be old enough to be separated from mum Uma. "Around 18 months of age is a natural point at which young pandas become independent," said a zoo spokesperson. "So transfers at this stage reflect the species' natural patterns and behaviour."
