A SHOPLIFTER assaulted a member of staff with a can of Red Bull before jumping into a river to try to avoid being caught by police, a court has heard.

Police officers, firefighters, ambulance crew and a helicopter were all involved in fishing Ryan Rankmore out of the water, at which point he said to those who had rescued him: "**** you."
