Senedd in crackdown on tobacco and vapes

SENEDD members last night agreed a new law which will stop tobacco being sold to people born on or after January 1, 2009.

The same law will also lead to controls about how vapes and nicotine products are advertised to children, and introduces new rules for shops selling tobacco and nicotine products.

The law, designed by the UK Government, covers an area which is devolved to the Welsh Government, so a separate vote was held in the Senedd.

Last night, Senedd members backed the bill.

The law:

■ Stops shops selling tobacco to anyone born in or after 2009.

■ Makes vapes and nicotine products less appealing with stronger controls on how flavours and descriptions can be used.

■ Brings in clearer checks on what is inside vape products.
