Inquest opens into death of baby an hour after her birth

AN INQUEST has opened looking at whether a medical procedure had a causative link to the death of an infant.

Nanw Thomas died an hour after her birth on July 31, 2024, at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

In the buildup to the birth of her second child, Nanw’s mother, Chloe Thomas, of Barry, was found to have a polyp on her cervix - a tumour that grows out of the mucous lining inside hollow organs.

A procedure was carried out for its removal, which led to the premature rupture of membranes - an infection risk Ms Thomas said she had not been made aware of at the time, the inquest at Pontypridd Coroners’ Court heard.

Coroner Rachel Knight said the first day of the inquest would look at whether the removal of the polyp had any causative link to Nanw’s death.
