A TOP Welsh independent school has posted “outstanding” final GCSE results after announcing it is to close at the end of next term.

St Clare's School in Porthcawl said it was marking its final GCSE result day “with exceptional achievements from pupils”.

‘The school, which will officially close in December, recorded a 100% pass rate, with 50% of grades at A* to A, 80% at A*to B and 96% at A*to C.

Staff were said to be in tears when the school announced it was shutting owing to factors beyond its control in May.

Ina heartfelt GCSE results day message St Clare’s School headteacher Helen Hier said: “I could not be prouder of our students and staff.

“These results reflect years of hard work, determination and a genuine love of learning.

“Although it is with sadness this will be the last results day for St. Clare's, these achievements are a lasting legacy.

“They demonstrate the very best of what our school community has stood for, excellence, creativity, resilience and care.
