Festive films for all of the family

Nothing beats cosying up to watch a Christmas movie and there's plenty for everyone to enjoy this year.

Here's our pick of some of the bestShrek

Today, 3.10pm, ITV1

Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) is a grumpy green ogre whose peace is shattered when the ruler of the realm, Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow), banishes all of the fairy-tale folk from his kingdom - and they end up seeking refuge in Shrek's swamp. Farquaad agrees to remove them if Shrek rescues spirited Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), so the ogre embarks on the quest of his life with motormouth donkey (Eddie Murphy, who steals the whole movie) amid colourful visuals and uproarious humour. The animation may have dated a bit since it was released, but the story remains engaging and contains laughs for children and parents as it twists the fairy-tale stereotypes.

The Little Mermaid

Tomorrow, 4.50pm, Channel 4

In direct violation of orders from her father King Triton (Javier Bardem), headstrong mermaid Ariel (Halle Bailey) obsesses about humankind. During a violent storm, a ship commanded by Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) runs aground and Ariel rescues him from a watery grave. Restored to full health, Eric vows to find his siren-songed saviour. Meanwhile, scheming sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) offers to transform Ariel into human form for three days to secure true love's kiss or she must return to the sea as the hag's prized possession. The Little Mermaid is a handsome live-action rendition of Disney's 28th animated feature film, buoyed by thingamabobs that made the original film so memorable including the irresistible Menken-Ashman songbook.
