City sees surge in police activity

A CITY has seen a surge in police activity this festive season, with officers arresting nine people and confiscating more than 100 illegal drugs over the past month.

In Newport city centre, five men have been charged with a total of 24 theft offences, while four others were arrested on suspicion of public order offences.
Officers have also carried out evening checks at 11 licensed premises as part of the police-led City Safe partnership initiative.
Despite the arrests, recent figures show a decline in certain crimes.
According to the police date, shoplifting in Newport city centre has fallen by 3.4% in the current financial year, while violence with injury offences have dropped by 10.9% over the same period.
