'Callous' driver struck OAP and fled the scene

"CALLOUS” motorist struck a pensioner, leaving him with 'life-changing' injuries, and then drove home rather than stopping to help. Liam Babbs was driving at twice the speed limit when he collided with a 77-year-old man who was cleaning his car.

The victim, Cliff Roberts, was left with 'irreversible' injuries and was screaming out in pain after being hit by the car, but Babbs, 26, left the scene.

Father-of-three Babbs, of Marsh Road, Rhyl, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was yesterday jailed for two years and eight months.

The court heard Mr Roberts had been flown to hospital in Stoke with suspected life-threatening injuries following the crash.

He survived, but now has metal rods in his legs and is unable to walk longer distances.

A judge at Mold Crown Court branded the defendant "callous" and said Mr Roberts' injuries are "irreversible".

The court heard he cannot visit his wife's grave as often as he used to, and hopes to one day walk his family's dog again.

Prosecutor Laura Knightly said police received a call at 8.22am on June 1 last year about a suspected hit-and-run in Kingsley Avenue, Rhyl.
