India dominate opening day
June 21, 2025
|Western Daily Press
ASHASVI Jaiswal and skipper Visits Gill made hay as England floundered after putting India into bat on day one of the first Rothesay Test in Leeds.
A revamped India batting line-up, without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, may have influenced Ben Stokes’ decision at a venue where the last six Tests have been won by the side fielding first.
India captain Gill said he, too, would have bowled, but it proved a good toss to lose as his tremendous 127 alongside Jaiswal’s masterful 101 in a stand of 129 lifted the tourists from 92 for two to 221 for three.
Gill and Rishabh Pant then put together another three-figure stand as the tourists closed on 359 for three.
Jaiswal would have been Ibw on 45 but Brydon Carse overstepped, while Gill could have been run out on one but Ollie Pope was off target with his throw. The India pair were otherwise largely untroubled.
