Warning over the risks of travelling to schools

SOMERSET’S MPs have issued a stark warning over the dangers facing children travelling to school, urging the government to prioritise investment in road safety and active travel infrastructure as congestion and accident risks mount across rural areas.

Speaking during a Westminster Hall debate, Sarah Dyke, Liberal Democrat MP for Glastonbury and Somerton, praised the recent opening of a new car-free path along the A378 by the Curry Rivel Active Travel Group.

Ms Dyke, who was among the first to cycle the route, said it provided vital safe space for pupils from local primary schools and the area’s academy.

"With half of local pupils ineligible for free secondary school transport, the path provides a safe space," she said. "Investing in active travel routes is key to supporting safe and sustainable school journeys, particularly in rural areas."
