TIME TO UNCOVER FULL TRUTH ABOUT FALKLANDS DISASTER
June 08, 2025
|Wales on Sunday
TODAY is the 43rd anniversary of the most lethal British military loss of life since World War II.
-
The Argentinian air force dropped three bombs on Sir Galahad, a supply ship packed with men and munitions. The ship exploded into a raging inferno.
Its sister ship HMS Tristram and one of her landing craft were also hit.
Most of the 56 killed that day were Welsh Guards, heading for the front-line for the final push on Port Stanley.
All the 500 survivors of Sir Galahad suffered life-changing injuries; many of the 150 physically injured suffered horrific burns and the rest suffered enduring mental scars which are still visible today.
Survivors and bereaved relatives have been cynically told they must wait until 2065 to discover why a ship loaded with nearly 600 troops in full view of the enemy was left with no aerial protection for more than five hours.
If Britain is to reverse the decline in military recruitment and retention, we need to treat military personnel and their families a lot better than this.
A 1982 Board of Inquiry into the loss of Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram was carefully constructed to avoid asking any of the difficult questions about the uneven deployment of resources, the inadequate assessment of risk and the failure to act on military signals foretelling an impending disaster.
Tainted evidence from senior commanders and no evidence at all from Welsh Guards survivors or senior officers guaranteed this inquiry was a whitewash.
