AL MVP has become a two-horse race

By now we can all certainly agree that Aaron Judge is having a season for the ages.

- BILL MADDEN

AL MVP has become a two-horse race

Aaron Judge, top, leads the majors in homers, runs batted in, on-base plus slugging, OPS+, total bases, extra-base hits, go-ahead RBIs and game-winning RBIs. Bobby Witt, above, leads in batting average, runs and hits — and he is doing it while playing shortstop.

A season comparable and in some ways even superior to Mickey Mantle's Triple Crown season of 1956; a season that might be the greatest of all seasons by a righthanded hitter.

Besides leading the majors in homers, runs batted in, on-base plus slugging, OPS+, total bases, extrabase hits, go-ahead RBIs and gamewinning RBIs, Judge has reached base in 119 of his 134 games this season. And, if his New York Yankees are able to ward off the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the American League East, Judge would ordinarily look like a lock for AL most valuable player, especially when you throw in the fact the Bombers are 34-12 in games in which he has homered.
