Bishop to widow at Jota funeral

If it is difficult to see an adult cry, it is even more difficult to see a child cry

GRIEF-STRICKEN family, friends and fans said their final farewell to Diogo Jota yesterday.

The Liverpool and Portugal forward, 28, was laid to rest alongside his brother André Silva after both died in a car crash on Thursday.

Diogo’s widow Rute, mother of his three young children, broke down in tears as she helped carry his coffin.

Bishop of Porto Dom Manuel Linda told the 28-year-old: "If it is sad to see an adult cry, it is even more painful when it is a child."

Addressing the children Dinis, four, Duarte, two, and Mafalda, seven months he said: "The one who suffers a lot is your mother. She is heartbroken.

"So are your grandparents. Seeing in front of you a coffin with the mortal remains of a son must be the ultimate torment, but when it is not just one coffin, but two, of two brothers, there are no words."

Paying tribute to the two brothers, Bishop Manuel Linda said: "Both of them rose in life through their own efforts. They did not look for sacrifices to achieve their goals.

PASSION

"André, for example, combined training with a degree in administration. They were selfless people, always respectful of others.
