Eminent Kathak dancer and founder of the Kadamb Centre for Dance, Kumudini Lakhia, passed away at the age of 95 on Saturday in Ahmedabad.
A pioneering figure in Indian classical dance, Lakhia had spent her final years living with her daughter, renowned dancer Maitreyi Hattangadi.
Her death marks the end of an era in Kathak, a dance form she tirelessly promoted and reinvented through decades of dedication and innovation. Lakhia was one of the most celebrated exponents of Kathak, a classical dance form from northern India, known for its intricate footwork, expressive storytelling, and rhythmic precision. Her contribution to the art was not only artistic but also pedagogical, as she mentored and inspired generations of dancers who have carried her legacy forward.
