Upholding secular system is a shared responsibility

The ministerial statement from Minister for Home Affairs K. Shanmugam was a timely reminder of the foundational principles that have allowed our multiracial, multi-religious nation to thrive (Steer clear of identity politics, uphold integrity of Singapore's secular system: Shanmugam, Oct 14).
The minister rightly called on politicians to resist the temptation to use race and religion for “easy political wins”. His critique of opposition parties for being slow or ambiguous in rejecting foreign religious endorsements during the 2025 General Election underscores the need for political clarity and speed on this fundamental issue.
However, to view this solely as a directive for politicians is to miss a crucial part of the equation. The integrity of our secular politics is not just a matter for Parliament; it is a shared responsibility that rests just as heavily on the shoulders of every citizen.
