Think out of the box to rejuvenate area around former home of Singapore Art Museum
November 19, 2025
|The Straits Times
Since it opened as a modern museum of the arts in 1996, the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) has been at the forefront of showcasing Southeast Asian contemporary visual arts in Singapore.
After its official move to Tanjong Pagar Distripark (a former warehouse not entirely suitable for its current use) in 2022, with limited space of just 3,000 sq m spread over two floors, the existing Bras Basah premises, formerly home to a secondary school, have been left in limbo.
This was attributed initially to delays in renovation works due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequently to uncertainty over what to do with the premises with their land and space constraints.
