After more than a decade-long absence from the UN General Assembly, an Indonesian head of government returned to this global stage with force.

In a much-acclaimed speech delivered on Sept 23, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called for the strengthening of UN multilateralism as the way forward to solve many of the world's ills.

Speaking after US President Donald Trump - who lambasted the UN as bloated and ineffective, attacked multiple countries and even castigated his predecessors - Mr Prabowo in his speech provided a striking contrast for those who believe that more, not less, global collaboration is needed to tackle global challenges.

A HISTORIC STATEMENT

The 2025 UN General Assembly was dominated by the Israel-Palestine conflict. It was historic because, for the first time, many of Israel's Western supporters decided to unilaterally recognise the state of Palestine - no doubt under strong pressure from their domestic constituents. Israel had greatly underestimated the power of social media in shaping public attitudes and continued with a business-as-usual approach.

Like many world leaders, Mr Prabowo reiterated Indonesia's commitment to a two-state solution. However, unlike the sharp criticism of Israel voiced by other leaders, he refrained from condemning Israel or the US directly in his speech. And in contrast to speeches by Arab leaders, Mr Prabowo even mentioned the need to safeguard Israel's security. Then he went one step further.
