Jakarta to e-commerce firms: Stop selling imported used clothes

Indonesia’s Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Ministry has summoned the country’s major e-commerce platforms to demand they stop advertising and selling imported secondhand clothing, as the government moves to limit imports that officials say are hurting local producers.

The ministry on Nov 7 met representatives from the Indonesian E-commerce Association (idEA), whose members include Shopee, Tokopedia and TikTok Shop, to follow up on President Prabowo Subianto’s order to curb such illegal imports.
The undersecretary for small enterprises Temmy Satya Permana said e-commerce platforms were urged to comply with a trade ministry regulation on e-commerce advertising and oversight.
“Illegal thrifting” is often carried out through live streaming on e-commerce platforms directly from warehouses, he said, adding that this could no longer be considered a small-scale business activity.
