More recently, Ms Christiana Budiyati, an elementary school teacher in South Tangerang, Banten, was reported to the police for allegedly verbally abusing a pupil, despite other witnesses saying that Ms Budi had not used any harsh words and had not singled out any pupil in particular.

The police again said that they would use restorative justice. The case was eventually closed on Jan 30, though not before a Change.org petition started by Ms Budi’s son garnered more than 30,000 signatures.

Mr Andreas Nathaniel Marbun, a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne and a criminal law lecturer at the University of Indonesia, said that Mr Hogi’s case and others like it were the result of a fundamental misconception of restorative justice by Indonesia’s law enforcement.
