Tea trade unions announce agitation over workers’ rights in North Bengal

A Joint Forum comprising 31 trade unions affiliated with the tea industry in North Bengal has announced a series of agitational programmes, citing the deteriorating condition of the sector and the continued denial of workers' legitimate rights.
At a meeting held in Siliguri on Sunday, the Forum resolved to stage demonstrations at every tea estate across North Bengal on 22 December, a day ahead of the suspension of green leaf plucking as per Tea Board norms. The programme will serve as a formal notice to initiate a larger agitation on multiple long-pending issues. Forum leaders will also submit representations to the district administrations in their respective areas.
The agitation will intensify in January 2026, with tea workers assembling at district-level locations from 11 to 24 January. A central rally has been planned for March to press their demands at a broader level.
