India batter Tilak Varma reflected on his growing comfort in the longer formats and credited senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and head coach Gautam Gambhir for shaping his development and mindset after India's hard-fought win in Ranchi.
India edged out South Africa by 17 runs in a high-scoring first ODI at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. After posting a formidable 349/8, built on Virat Kohli's superb century and crucial half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, the hosts bowled out the visitors for 332.
A strong fightback from Matthew Breetzke (72 off 80), Marco Jansen (70 off 39) and Corbin Bosch (67 off 51) kept the game alive deep into the chase.
