UNDER FIRE

- MASABATA MKWANANZI

THE Gauteng Department of Roads and Logistics is under fire after splurging nearly R200 million defending itself in pothole-related lawsuits, with a staggering 988 cases filed against the department.

This was revealed by the Gauteng MEC for Roads and Logistics, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, in a written reply to a question tabled by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL).

Diale-Tlabela provided a breakdown of the department's spending over the past five years: nearly R70m was spent on legal costs after the department was found liable in 145 mostly minor pothole cases; over R43m was paid for injuries caused by unsafe road surfaces; and almost R87m went to out-of-court settlements.
