Green light for town centre applications

- Phil Corrigan Local Democracy Reporter

THREE major town centre regeneration schemes have been given the green light.

Planning committee members at Newcastle Borough Council approved applications for the Ryecroft, Astley Place and Midway sites, which will provide hundreds of new homes, along with shops, bars, restaurants and green spaces.

Borough councillors already agreed to spend £85 million on the projects, which are being delivered by 'social impact' developer Capital&Centric.

The vacant Ryecroft site, formerly occupied by the old Sainsbury's supermarket and civic offices, will be regenerated with 175 homes, including terraced housing and flats.

There will also be a 'green spine' between two four-storey apartment buildings, linking the ring road with Corporation Street in the town centre.
