The Sentinel

ONE hundred years on, let’s celebrate the great achievements in the health of the population of the City of Stoke-on-Trent.

I'm so proud to have been a GP working in Stoke-on-Trent for 20 years and a quality lead for other general practices across the City.

In 1925, the average life expectancy at birth was about 40 years. Now it is almost double that - about 76 years for males and 80 years for females living in Stoke-on-Trent (though this is three years less than the average for England).

Back in 1925, 106 babies in every 1000 died before they were 12 months old. Now, this infant mortality rate is 7.6 babies per 100,000 births. Wow! That's more than 10,000 times better now.

The causes of so many infants under one years old dying in 1925 were mainly down to congenital defects, premature birth, respiratory diseases like pneumonia, and diarrhoea.
